Las Vegas SchoolsThere are several other private schools in different parts of town, but public schools can be just as effective for a dedicated student. Rancho High School was the second oldest school in Las Vegas but its recent reconstruction has made it one of the newest. The new two-story building is equipped with wireless internet access for laptops and every classroom has computers for the students to use. Rancho has an outstanding magnet program that allows 850 students to take classes that train them in specific fields of study. A magnet program draws students who are interested in specific subjects such as science and technology. Studying a specific subject makes it easier to master. Walter Bracken Magnet School is one of the top public elementary schools in the nation. The school was recently honored with the Merit Award from Magnet Schools of America. Five hundred students apply for the program each year but only a few of them are chosen. To make it fair the students are chosen at random. It is still considered an honor to attend Walter Bracken elementary school which helps motivate the kids to work hard. Not long ago, 70% of its students were failing. Today, that number has turned completely around with students showing 70% proficiency. The Las Vegas school system spends millions of dollars each year to make sure that every child has the opportunity for a good education. |
