To elevate the achievement of Southern Nevada students, the Nevada Council to Establish Academic Standards for Public Schools was established. The council is responsible for instituting high standards in art, computer literacy, English, foreign language, health & physical education, mathematics, sciences, social studies and pre-kindergarten. A dozen new schools are built every year to keep up with the large number of people moving to the Valley. Las Vegas has become the fifth largest school system in America. Parents must consider many things when deciding on where to send their children to school. School size can be a major factor in selecting a school. If the child is a gifted musician or athlete then a school with a good extra-curricular program might be the best choice. A shy child might be better off at a small school with more one-on-one time with the teachers.
